You Don’t Get What You Deserve

Justified freely by his grace.
           —Romans 3:24

Marilyn vos Savant, long-time Ask Marilyn columnist for Parade Magazine, nailed the highest I.Q. score ever recorded at the time—228.

It’s brash for someone with a two-digit I.Q. to challenge Marilyn, but here goes …

“Sometimes,” she wrote, “I just wish that we would all get what we deserve.”

Really? Why not just put in a request a global plague of Ebola and call it a day?

During the Civil War a buck private was allegedly hauled before General Robert E. Lee for an infraction of rules.

“You don’t need to be afraid, son. You’ll get justice here,” said Lee to the terrified soldier.

“That’s what I’m afraid of, General,” replied Johnny Reb.

Aren’t we all?

But for those who have surrendered to Christ grace has replaced justice.

We don’t get what we deserve. We get grace.

You can’t earn grace; only receive it.
