The day Frederick Buechner graduated from Princeton, he and his classmates were decked out in caps and gowns, ready to march to their commencement seats. A fellow-graduate strolled the line and asked each of them, “What are you going to do now?”
Buechner said he found the question unnerving because of the long-range implication: not what was he going to do in the immediate future, but what was he going to do with the rest of his life.
It’s not just a question for young graduates; it’s for each of us, whatever our age. It has nothing to do with the past, for there’s nothing we can do about the past. The question is, “What are you going to do with the rest of your life?
