Submit Your Plans to God

If it is the Lord’s will.
    —James 4:15

Ellen Langer in The Illusion of Control asserts that we usually overestimate our degree of control.

James agrees:

“You that say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will travel to a certain city, where we will stay a year and go into business and make a lot of money.’ You don’t even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears. What you should say is this: ‘If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that’” (Jas 4:13–15).

Submit your plans to God for either his approval or his veto: “Lord, here is what I want to do if it meets your approval. If it isn’t in sync with your will, veto it—and grant me a spirit of unruffled acceptance.”

You will never go wrong with
“Your will be done.”
