One Day at a Time

I thought about the former days,
the years of long ago.
   —Psalm 77:5

The “good old days” weren’t all that great. The paradise that you remember has been embellished by imagination. In any case, those days are long gone.

Living one day at a time has much to commend it. That’s all you can do anyway. You can’t relive yesterday, and you can’t live tomorrow in advance. Today is the only day you have.

A line in The Book of Common Prayer runs this way: “Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Don’t let a promising today be hijacked by
an unchangeable yesterday or an unknown tomorrow.
