Thanks be to God, who delivers me
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
—Romans 7:25
You’ve been disappointed with yourself, haven’t you? Why did I do that? Why did I say that? Why did I think that?
The apostle Paul, too, was disappointed in his failure to live up to what was honorable, admirable, and exemplary: “I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing” (Rom 7:19).
“What a wretched man I am!” he wrote. “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Rom 7:24). He knew the answer: “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 7:25). Followed by this: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:1).
Don’t give in to the despair of disappointment. Be like Paul.
Jesus is the only answer.
