Hear and Care

Look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others.
                —Philippians 2:4

Her grocery cart was packed with enough junk food to clog the arteries of the population of a small town. Seeing the shopper behind her eyeballing her heart-attack-waiting-to-happen grub, she laughed and said, “You only live once.”

The dog-tired woman working checkout said, “Once is enough.”

One-liner jest? Probably more like, “I’ve been on my feet all day without a break. When I finish here, I’ll take the bus home, fix dinner, wash dishes, do laundry, and iron shirts. Tomorrow I’ll be back here and then back there, doing it all over again.”

Do we feel her pain, see her, and hear her as the special person she really is?

Dear God, help me to be sensitive to those you put in my path today.

Today, you may be the only person
who seems to hear and care.
