I will come back and
take you to be with me.
—John 14:3
Jesus told his friends, “I will be with you only a little longer” (Jn 13:33).
They were like children playing with their toys when Mom and Dad put on their coats and head out the door. They have three questions: “Where are you going?” “Can we go with you?” “Who will stay with us?”
Jesus’ answers were confusing: “I am going back to my Father.” “You can’t go with me now; you can come later.” “The Father will send the Spirit to stay with you.”
The Word has given us a clearer view than they had. Still, the same questions linger, and the same answers remain.
“Where are you going?”
“Back to my Father.”
“Can I go with you?”
“Not now. Later.”
“Who will stay with me?”
“The Holy Spirit.”
Be ready to go when he comes.
